Disc herniation

Chiropractors have a 6-year university education and are specialists in herniated discs. That is why the government provides a particularly high subsidy for an 8-week package course for this disease. The course consists of 4 regular consultations with examination, advice, follow-up and treatment. The chiropractor will inform your doctor along the way.

What does a herniated disc in the lower back or neck feel like?

The typical symptoms of a herniated disc in the lower back are pain and tingling sensations in the leg or buttock. There may also be an area on the leg where you cannot feel as much as you normally can. There may also be reduced strength in the leg. Many people also have back pain, but this is not always the case.

The typical symptoms of a herniated disc in the neck are pain and tingling sensations in the arm and shoulder blade. In addition, many people also experience pain in the neck and in some cases there is also reduced strength and sensitivity in the arm and fingers.

Should I be scanned?

It is not usually necessary to have a scan to make the diagnosis. Only if there is doubt about the diagnosis during the 4-8 weeks or the pain is very severe, you may need to have a scan.

Treatment

A herniated disc heals naturally – much like a wound heals. Therefore, it will take some time before the pain disappears.

The first part of the treatment is advice on what you can do to relieve the pain. We assess whether exercises or manual treatment of the joints and muscles in the back will help.

When the worst pain is over, you may need to retrain your back. If necessary, we will create a program for you that you will receive by email.

What can I do myself?

It is important to stay as active as possible and continue your daily activities as much as you can. Movement may hurt, but should not worsen the symptoms in your leg.

Go to work as soon as you can without it worsening your leg symptoms.

Be aware of

Contact a doctor, emergency doctor or chiropractor if you:

  • not being able to feel when you need to urinate or otherwise not being able to control your urination or bowel movements.
  • is numb in the crotch.
  • Losing strength in the leg.

We collaborate with the doctor

Both physiotherapists and doctors can refer you to a chiropractor for treatment of your herniated disc, but you can also contact us yourself if you would like to be consulted and receive treatment.

Especially in connection with patients with herniated discs, our collaboration with doctors and physiotherapists is important. Both the results from scans and the chiropractor's treatment of a herniated disc are seen as important elements on the path to recovery.
